Premier League Round Up 28/01/09

Chelsea moved into second, as they beat Middlesbrough 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea didn’t get going until the second half and took the lead in the 58th minute through a Salomon Kalou volley. Kalou doubled his and Chelsea lead in the 81st minute, with a simple headed after a mistake by Ross Turnbull.

Liverpool could draw 1-1 with Wigan at the JJB Stadium. Liverpool dominated the game, but couldn’t find a way through till the 41st minute. Yossi Benayoun went round Mike Pollitt and found the net from a tight angle. Liverpool failed to turn their dominance into a second goal and was punished late on. Jason Koumas was brought down in the area by Lucas and Mido fired home the penalty in the 83rd, his first goal since moving from Middlesbrough on loan.

Arsenal snatched a dramatic 92nd minute equaliser at Everton, to secure a 1-1 draw. The game was a tight affair, short of chances. Everton took one of their chances in the 61st minute, as Tim Cahill leaped majestically to head home Leighton Baines cross past Manuel Almunia. Just as it looked like Everton would collect all three points Arsenal struck with a fantastic equaliser. Abou Diaby floated a ball into the Everton area and Robin Van Persie volleyed home.

Manchester City beat Newcastle United 2-1 at Eastland’s. Shaun Wright-Phillips gave City the lead on 17 minutes after Robinho put him in. Newcastle saw injury striker Michael Owen limp off in the first half. City doubled their lead through debut boy Craig Bellamy on 77th minutes, as he fired a shot from the edge of the area. Andy Carroll scored a consolation goal for Newcastle in the 81st minute, with a tap in after good work from David Edgar.

Blackburn came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Bolton at Ewood Park. Matthew Taylor gave Bolton the lead after 15 minutes, sliding in to score from a Makukula cross-shot. Kevin Davies doubled Bolton’s lead on 35 minutes, scoring against his old club. Stephen Warnock got Blackburn back in the game in the 66th minute, after being set up by Benni McCarthy. McCarthy then had a penalty saved by Jussi Jaaskelainen, after the Bolton keeper had brought down Roque Santa Cruz. Blackburn left it late to equalise, scoring in the 87th minute Benni McCarthy making up for his spot-kick miss by finishing from close range.

West Ham continued their recent good run by beating Hull City 2-0 at Upton Park. West Ham seemed to be in complete control of the first half. Mark Noble had a spot kick saved brilliantly by Matt Duke, before West Ham finally took the lead in the 33rd minute. Carlton Coles shot was saved by Matt Duke but David Di Michele was on hand at the far post to find the net. Carlton Cole doubled West Hams lead in the 51st minute, to make it another miserable trip for the Tigers.

Premier League Round Up 27/01/09

Manchester United stretched their lead at the top of the league by hammering West Brom 5-0 at the Hawthorns. Dimitar Berbatov gave United the lead on 22 minutes. Paul Robinson was dismissed on 39 minutes for a poor challenge on Park. Carlos Tevez added Uniteds second goal in the 44th minute, after Scott Carson dropped the ball and Tevez tapped the ball home.

It got even worse for West Brom in the second half; after Nemanja Vidic headed home Ryan Giggs corner in the 60th minute. United scored their fourth in the 65th minute, as Ryan Giggs played in Ronaldo for an easy finish. Ronaldo scored his brace in the 73rd minute, from an excellent Berbatov through ball. This result leaves United in a strong position at the top of the league.

Aston Villa beat Portsmouth 1-0 at Fratton Park, after Portsmouth put in a flat performance. Emile Heskey put the Villian’s ahead on his debut, firing past David James in the 21st minute. Villa dominated the game and Portsmouth never got into the rhythm of the game. Portsmouth’s chances of getting anything seemed to disappear in the 71st minute, when Nadir Belhadj was dismissed for a second bookable offence. The three points took Villa into joint second in the table.

Tottenham collected three vital points at home to Stoke City, after claiming a 3-1 victory. Aaron Lennon gave Tottenham the lead in the eighth minute, after good play from Jermain Defoe. Defoe got on the score sheet himself in 21st minute, smashing a shot past Thomas Sorensen in the Stoke goal. Tottenham made it 3-0 in the 25th minute as Luka Modric’s corner was headed home by Michael Dawson. James Beattie scored his first goal for Stoke in the 57th minute, but it was little more than a consolation.

Sunderland also clinched a vital victory after they defeated Fulham 1-0 at the Stadium of Light. Sunderland made the breakthrough in the 55th minute; Kenwyne Jones pounced on the rebound after Mark Schwarzer had denied Djibril Cisse.

FA Cup Fourth Round 25+26/01/09

Swansea caused the shock of the round by beating Portsmouth 2-0 at Fratton Park. The FA Cup holders went out thanks to two first half goals. Nathan Dyer opened the scoring for the Swans in the 26th minute. Jason Scotland doubled Swansea’s lead from the penalty spot, after Jordi Gomez was fouled by Nadir Belhadj. Doncaster Rovers managed to hold Aston Villa to a 0-0 draw at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Burnley also earned a respectable 2-2 draw at West Brom. The visitors took the lead on 22 minutes through a Graham Alexander penalty. Robert Koren equalised for the baggies in the 31st minute. Do-Heon Kim put West Brom ahead for the first time in the 45th minute. Burnley however, snatched a dramatic equaliser in the 89th minute through Martin Paterson, to earn a replay at Turf Moor.

Fulham defeated Kettering 4-2 at the A-Line Arena. The conference side put up a brave fight however. Fulham took the lead on 12 minutes through Simon Davies. Craig Westcarr equalised for the home side on 36 minutes. It looked as though the conference side might just snatch a draw until the 77th minute; Danny Murphy putting the Cottagers ahead. Craig Westcarr scored his second in the 83rd minute from the penalty spot and it looked like Kettering could earn a replay. Andy Johnson put the Premier League side back in the lead two minutes from time. Bobby Zamora made the game safe just a minute later and sent Fulham into the Fifth round.

Hartlepool were beaten by West Ham 2-0 at Victoria Park. West Ham struck twice just before half time. The Hammers scored through Valon Behrami in the 44th minute and a minute later a Mark Noble penalty. Hull City defeated Millwall 2-0 at the KC Stadium. Hull took the lead after 15 minutes through defender Michael Turner. The second goal came from captain Ian Ashbee in the 84th minute.

In an all Premier League clash Sunderland drew 0-0 with Blackburn at the Stadium of Light. They will now have to meet again at Ewood Park to decide who will progress.

In the all Championship clash Sheffield United defeated Charlton 2-1 at Bramall Lane. The home side took the lead on the 26th minute through Danny Webber. Midfielder Lee Hendrie doubled Uniteds lead in the 69th minute. Charlton did manage to get a goal back in the 69th through substitute Chris Dickson, but it wasn’t enough and United progress to the Fifth round.

Chelsea secured a Fifth round place with a 3-1 victory over Ipswich Town at Stamford Bridge. Michael Ballack opened the scoring for Chelsea in the 16th minute. Ipswich scored an unlikely equaliser in the 34th minute, through defender Alex Bruce. Chelsea regained the lead with Ballack’s second of the game in the 59th minute. Frank Lampard scored Chelsea’s third in the 85th minute, to send Chelsea through to the fifth round.

Manchester United defeated Tottenham 2-1 at Old Trafford, despite going a goal down to a Roman Pavlyuchenko goal in the fifth minute. From then on United took control of the match. Paul Scholes equalised for the Champions in the 35th minute. Former Tottenham hero Dimitar Berbatov then put United in the lead in the 36th minute. Tottenham tried but couldn’t get that vital equaliser.

Non-league Torquay came close to claiming a replay, but Coventry found an 87th minute winner from substitute Elliott Ward, to send the Championship side through to the fifth round. Middlesbrough claimed a 2-1 victory over Wolves at Molineux. Alfonso Alves scored just before half time to give Boro the lead. Sam Vokes equalised for the Championship leaders in the 63rd minute. Boro left it late to regain the lead, scoring in the 83rd minute through substitute Marvin Emnes.

In possibly the game of the round, Watford overcame Crystal Palace 4-3 at Vicarage Road. Watford started the stronger and took the lead from a Jay DeMerit strike. On-loan Jack Cork doubled the Hornets lead after 27 minutes. Clint Hill got Palace back in the game with an effort on 48 minutes. Watford regained their two goal lead on 67 minutes through Will Hoskins. Gregor Rasiak made it 4-1 with a 70th minute strike. Paul Ifill got Palace back into the game with 83rd and 90th minute strikes, but it wasn’t enough for Palace as Watford went through.

In Sundays Fourth round ties both games ended in stalemate and will have to be replayed. Arsenal drew 0-0 with Cardiff at Ninian Park. Cardiff had the better of the first half and missed numerous chances, notably through Ross McCormack. Arsenal got back into the game in the second half, with Emmanuel Adebayor missing the ball completely in front of goal. Arsenal however, just couldn’t find a way past the stubborn Cardiff defence. The two teams will meet again at the Emirates on Wednesday week.

In the second Merseyside Derby in a week Liverpool and Everton drew 1-1 at Anfield. In truth, Liverpool dominated the game, but Everton were brilliant in defence, particularly Phil Jagielka and Joleon Lescott.

Everton took the lead with a rare attack on 27th minutes, with the aforementioned Lescott glancing a header past Pepe Reina in the Liverpool goal. Liverpool had lots of possession in the first half but struggled to create anything. Liverpool created more chances in the second half and equalised through an excellently taken Steven Gerrard goal in the 54th minute. Although Liverpool pressed Everton in the second half, they couldn’t find a way past Everton’s tough backline. The two sides will now meet again in a week and a half at Goodison Park.
