Premier League Round-Up 30th+31st/01/10
Saturday 30th January 2010
Chelsea moved four points clear at the top of the Premier League with a 2-1 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor. Chelsea took the lead in the 27th minute as Nicolas Anelka scored from close range after a good team move. However the home side were back on level terms in the second half. Steven Feltcher held off Brazilian defender Alex and fired low into the net. Burnley held on until the 82nd minute as Chelsea captain John Terry headed home a corner from the right.
Liverpool battled to a 2-0 victory over Bolton at Anfield. Liverpool took the lead late on in the first half through Dutch striker Dirk Kuyt. Liverpool missed numerous chances including David Ngog missing a glorious opportunity from close range. Liverpool did score a second goal in the 70th minute as Emiliano Insua's effort deflected off Kevin Davies and found the net. Liverpool are now just one point off the top four in the Premier League.
Birmingham and Tottenham drew 1-1 at St Andrews. The game was a scrappy affair but Tottenham took the lead in the 69th minute through a low strike from Jermain Defoe. It looked like Tottenham would claim all three points until the 90th minute and Liam Ridgewell's close range equaliser. Tottenham remain fourth in the Premier League table but now only lead Liverpool by one point.
Aston Villa strengthened their position in the race for Champions League football next season by beating Fulham 2-0 at Craven Cottage. Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor headed the visitors in front after getting the better of young Fulham defender Chris Smalling. Agbonlahor doubled his goal tally for the day with a superb curling effort past Mark Schwarzer in the Fulham goal. Villa now find themselves just two points away from fourth place.
Relegation battlers Hull City and Wolves drew 2-2 at the KC Stadium in an entertaining encounter. The home side took the lead in the 11th minute as Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink fired home after good work from strike-partner Jozy Altidore. Hull equalised early in the second half as Anthony Gardner sliced the ball past his own keeper from a Ronald Zubar cross.
